There are plenty of browsers to choose from, but two of the most popular, when it comes to privacy at least, are headed down radically divergent paths. Whereas Google appears keen on crippling Chrome users’ efforts to block tracker-driven ads, Mozilla on Tuesday moved to block such trackers by default, with the aim of preventing companies like Google from developing profiles of users that feed behaviorally-targeted ads. “We believe that in order to truly protect people, we need to establish a new standard that puts people’s privacy first,” said David Camp, senior vice president of Firefox. …

Solving the sun’s super-heating mystery with Parker Solar Probe  Phys.org

Credit: University of Michigan It’s one of the greatest and longest-running mysteries surrounding, quite literally, our sun—why is its outer atmosphere hotter than its fiery surface? University of Michigan researchers believe they have the answer, and hope to prove it with help from NASA’s Parker Solar Probe. In roughly two years, the probe will be the first manmade craft to enter the zone surrounding the sun where heating looks fundamentally different than what has previously been seen in space. This will allow them to test their theory that the heating is due to small magnetic waves trave…

Researchers develop superconducting quantum refrigerator – Phys.org

Researchers develop superconducting quantum refrigerator  Phys.org

The superconductor fridge is similar to a conventional refrigerator, in that it moves a material between hot and cold reservoirs. However, instead of a refrigerant that changes from a liquid state to a gas, the electrons in a metal change from the paired superconducting state to an unpaired normal state. Credit: University of Rochester illustration / Michael Osadciw Imagine a refrigerator so cold it could turn atoms into their quantum states, giving them unique properties that defy the rules of classical physics. In a paper published in Physical Review Applied, Andrew Jordan, professor of p…

Crypto entrepreneur pays $4.57 million for lunch with Warren Buffett  CNN

Cryptocurrency skeptic Warren Buffett will dine with a bitcoin enthusiast, all in the name of charity. Entrepreneur Justin Sun bid $4.57 million at a charity auction to have lunch with the legendary investor. Sun launched cryptocurrency TRX token in 2017. He also founded Tron network — an operating system based on the blockchain technology that underlies cryptocurrencies. Buffett has repeatedly criticized cryptocurrency, even calling bitcoin “rat poison squared.” The Berkshire Hathaway CEO has often compared the cryptocurrency to gold, saying that both assets are strictly speculative and do…
